The earliest surviving artifact of the Welsh love spoon dates back to around 1670AD, but the tradition is believed to be far older.
The Love spoon was a form of love letter made as gift by men to women during courtship and betrothal. Few people in Wales during this time had any form of literacy so symbols were carved into the spoon handles to communicate emotions.
Today the love spoon is often given as a gift to mark significant moments in life, including marriages, anniversaries and christenings. They can also be used as bonbonniere, as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas did at their 2000 wedding.
